The Lesser Shortwing is a very small bird, but surprisingly, it has a really loud call.
I photographed this male in Fraser’s Hill. I’ve heard this species many times here, and once you know the call, it’s quite easy to recognise when you hear it again.
Most of the time, hearing it is the easy part. Finding the bird and getting a clear view for a photo can take a bit more effort.

This time I also managed to photograph the female, so I thought it would be nice to share both together.
They may be small and easy to miss when moving around close to the forest floor, but that loud, familiar call usually gives them away.
For me, the call is probably the easiest way to know there’s a Lesser Shortwing somewhere nearby.
