The Garnet Pitta (Erythropitta granatina) is definitely one of the most beautiful birds to look for in Taman Negara Sungai Relau, Merapoh.
Years ago, this was one of the more reliable places to find this stunning pitta. Birders regularly visited the area, keeping track of active spots and sharing information about bird movements.
Things have changed over the years. Visitors are now required to engage a Taman Negara guide when entering the park, including those already accompanied by a private birding guide.
While park guides play an important role in managing access and visitor safety, specialist birding knowledge is equally important. With fewer independent birding trips and less regular monitoring, some previously reliable birding spots have become harder to keep track of.

A Lucky Encounter with My Australian Client
Recently, I brought a birder from Australia to look for the Garnet Pitta. We decided to try an old, established spot that birders have known for many years.
We waited patiently, hoping the bird would show up.
And luckily, around midday, it finally appeared!
The encounter was quite brief, but my client managed to get a good look at this beautiful bird. Definitely one of those moments that makes all the waiting worthwhile!
For me, this is what birding is all about. Knowing the habitat, understanding the birds, being patient, and sometimes having a little luck on your side.
